Book Review

I just finished reading a good book, and thought I'd share it with you.

The First Escape (The Dopple Ganger Chronicles) by G.P. Taylor

3 stars out of 5

A fun, creative approach that mixes standard text, sometimes creatively designed, with giant dripping letters covering the page to create a particular reaction, combined with comic storytelling, drawn in simple, slick color panels that scream movement, which fits the tone of the book. It's a fun, frantic and slightly spooky tale of two trouble making twin girls and a resourceful boy who live at a home for wayward girls (the boy was left there by his father, and now cleans the building). A woman arrives to adopt only one of the girls...and from there on the action becomes extremely frantic and it's difficult for me to explain it without spoiling too much, so I'll simply say that while the tale is enjoyable, and a good start to a series while still being a good stand alone tale, the experimental style of the medium and the overall pace of the book threw me off a bit, hence the mere 3 star rating. I look forward to seeing improvement in later books though.

September Schedule

Hello you loyal library friends!

Game Night (ages 13-18) is once again this Thursday from 6-8 p.m.

I want to take this opportunity to speak on the various activities the RPL Teen Department is doing this September:

On September 1st, we have our first Tuesday Teen Book Group.  It is from 5-6 p.m. in the Community Room and is for grades 6-12.  If anyone has to be a little late, that’s ok!

We’ll be discussing the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  It’s a book about a post-apocalyptic world where a tyrannical government makes the various districts of Panem send two teens a piece to go fight for their lives in a futuristic bio dome while being broadcast across the nation.  The reader follows the events through the eyes of Katniss, a girl from a poor district who volunteers to replace her sister.  It’s action packed, but also has a number of issues that can be raised for discussion, from freedom to the meaning of reality TV.

Stephenie Meyer, the author of Twilight series, had this to say about the book on her blog a few months back.

"People often ask me for reading suggestions, and I'm always happy to share because books are exciting things to me. My latest excitement is this: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I was so obsessed with this book I had to take it with me out to dinner and hide it under the edge of the table so I wouldn't have to stop reading. The story kept me up for several nights in a row, because even after I was finished, I just lay in bed wide awake thinking about it. I've been recommending it to total strangers in Target. And now to everyone who reads my website. The Hunger Games is amazing." –Meyer

If you have already read the Hunger Games, you may know that a sequel is coming out, to be released on September 2nd (i.e. the day after our group) maybe now would be a good time to go through the book again? And we will definitely be talking about what could be happening in the sequel.

Finally, if you just don’t like the book, then come and have some refreshments, and suggest something for us to do next month!!

Teen Coffee House
September 3rd  6:00pm-8:00pm
Community Room
Come enjoy coffee, poetry and singing.  We will have an open mic for those who wish to share any poetry or songs with their peers.

Empower Me 2 Be
September 8th    5:00pm-6:00pm
Community Room
A fun and practical healthy living course equipping teens with new attitudes, skills and knowledge about eating better and moving more-for life.  Now that school is in session, you’ll need that added boost that comes with a healthy lifestyle.  Come and join us!

Young Adult Advisory Council
(YAAC)
September 12th, 11:00am-11:30am
Children’s Story Time Room
Share your thoughts and ideas on what books and activities you would like to see happen in the Teen Library.

Anime Club
September 12th & 26th   12:00pm-2:00pm
Community Room
This month, we’re watching Hayao Miyazaki films!  Plus share your anime artwork, fan-fiction, or just chat with other anime fans.

Sept 12th: My Neighbor Totoro (G)
Sept 26th: The Castle in the Sky (PG)

Game Night
September 17th & 24th
6:00pm-8:00pm
Community Room

Picture Me Workshop
September 22nd    5:00pm-6:00pm
Children’s Story Time Room
We will have photo frames for teens to decorate with their own individual style.

Thanks and I look forward to seeing you all! Hope your school year is going well!

-Evan

The Dark Knight

We were closed the last few days but now are back!

As of now, we DO plan to show our Teen Scene Movie: The Dark Knight. The event is for ages 13-18. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and some menace. The movie will start at approximately 6 p.m., and lasts a little over two and a half hours. We will then close the library at 9:00. Keep that in mind!! Roads may become icy as night falls tonight, so plan accordingly.

In the chance we have to close the library early, I’ll be sure to send out an email before I run home. But if you have questions, please call the library (479-621-1152).

Also, a word on conduct at teen events. The library is a public institution, and while we want to have fun, we have to respect others and display certain standards of conduct. Foul and offensive language and harassing any one on library property, including outside, will not be tolerated.

Thanks,

Book Group

If you haven't signed up for the Teen Rogers Book Group, you still can. Just click here! We meet for the first time on February 3rd at 4:30 in the Community Room, and we'll be talking about Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Hunger Games is about a girl in a future world who takes her sister's place in the annual "Hunger Games," where teenagers either win...or die. It's picked up some publicity since Stephenie Meyer promoted it on her website:

"People often ask me for reading suggestions, and I'm always happy to share because books are exciting things to me. My latest excitement is this: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I was so obsessed with this book I had to take it with me out to dinner and hide it under the edge of the table so I wouldn't have to stop reading. The story kept me up for several nights in a row, because even after I was finished, I just lay in bed wide awake thinking about it. I've been recommending it to total strangers in Target. And now to everyone who reads my website. The Hunger Games is amazing." -Meyer

If you're one of the first ten to sign up, you can get your very own copy at the library! Just come by and ask me at the YA desk, or someone at Reference about signing up! Attendance and supplies are limited, so don't hesitate! And get reading!

As for what's happening this week: We've got another game night this Thursday at 6, plus another anime club meeting this Saturday at noon. And coming up in February, we have another glass etching workshop, this time with a Valentine's Day theme. Sign up for that here.

That's all for now!

New Materials

First off, there's still spots available for our ducktape workshop! Click the link to sign up online!

We have some new books and materials to check out!
After escaping a death sentence in the summer of 1775, Octavian and his tutor find shelter but no safe harbor in British-occupied Boston and, persuaded by Lord Dunmore's proclamation offering freedom to slaves who join his counterrevolutionary Royal Ethiopian Regiment, Octavian and his friends soon find themselves engaged in naval raids on the Virginia coastline as the Revolutionary War breaks out in full force.
This is the sequel to the award winning book by M.T. Anderson.

Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle written by David Michelinie & Bob Layton, penciled by John Romita Jr
Iron Man faces his most untouchable foe in criminal industrialist Justin Hammer and his literal army of super-villains! But can the Armored Avenger overcome an even more implacable personal demon, invulnerable to technology or wealth?

The ground breaking series where Iron Man fights not only super villains, but his personal addictions as well.

Usagi Yojimbo: The Mother of the Mountains, written and illustrated by Stan Saki.
When plague strikes a border town in the mountains of the Geishu Province, Lord Noriyuki sends his loyal bodyguard Tomoe to investigate. Once there, she and her retinue discover a truth far more terrible. Only the rabbit ronin Usagi might extricate his friend from her perilous predicament - except that he's landed in the same one himself!

This epic samurai series, told in comic form with animal characters, is a personal favorite of mine.

There's really too many books for me to cover here, not only that, but we have a number of new music CDs as well. So check us out!
